/ OBSCURE SYNTHESIS /
o b s c u r e s y n t h e s i s is a collaboration projects between Kenyan filmmaker and performing artist Silas Miami and Finnish painter and installation artist Isabella Chydenius. This body of work combines Nordic minimalism and the multi-faceted landscape of East and Southern Africa. It brings together two varying spaces that find symbiotic balance and diversity through colour, while embracing the human physical form and finding purpose and inspiration of the environment where the body of work is created; Cape Town and Johannesburg.
Each piece acts as an independent collaboration between the artists and performers who have allowed themselves to be airs for expression. The pieces explore intimacy through the personal space created by the action of painting each other: capturing the moments after the exchange.
They are simultaneously a representation and opposition of what current society and online living is doing to our minds and lives. They visualize the walls we create and the masks we put on terms other than those of the performer.

Isabella Chydenius (b.1988) is a Finnish interdisciplinary artist working and living between Helsinki, Finland and Cape Town, South Africa.
Isabella's work focuses on people and the relationship to oneself and each other. With her work she explores the relations to our physical and emotional environments, experimenting and challenging set ideas and norms.
Isabella’s paintings are representations of the mindsets that she encounter within her everyday life. They are autobiographies while concurrently being biographies of situations and mindscapes around her. These portraits reflect on experiences in the world while being introspections of her life.
